Touches: He Touched Me

“Now the leper on whom the sore is, his clothes shall be torn and his head bare; and he shall cover his mustache, and cry, ‘Unclean! Unclean!'” (Leviticus 13:45, NKJV)

“Now a leper came to Him, imploring Him, kneeling down to Him and saying to Him, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” Then Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.” As soon as He had spoken, immediately the leprosy left him, and he was cleansed.” (Mark 1:40–42, NKJV)

The Law of God was not given primarily for health or medical reasons. Rather the Law reflected man’s moral condition before a Holy God. Sin is real, and it separated the leper from fellowship with God and with Man. This is why the cleansed leper had to bring sin and guilt offerings before being admitted back into fellowship, and the tabernacle.

All this makes the story of the leper in Mark all the more wondrous.

I am sure Yeshua did not just touch the leper with the tips of his fingers, as we would probably do. Instead, he most likely, put his whole hand on the man, warmly, lovingly, not hurriedly to get it over with. And as He had his hand on this man, he looked with eyes full of compassion as deep as the ocean, and said, “I am willing, be cleansed.”

In this, Yeshua wasn’t saying that He happened to want to do it just at that moment. No. In this, He declared God’s Will towards all those who would come on the basis of Mercy.

God was saying in this: I desire Mercy, come near me, let me take your uncleanness and sin and disease, and you come and fellowship and live with me forever.”

My sins are not just skin deep; they go all the way to the core of my being. This is who I am. Yet, impossibly so, at the cross, God has put His hand on me, lovingly, warmly, not hurriedly, and saved me to be His own, forever.

Shackled by a heavy burden,
‘Neath a load of guilt and shame.
Then the hand of Jesus touched me,
And now I am no longer the same.

He touched me, Oh He touched me,
And oh the joy that floods my soul!
Something happened and now I know,
He touched me and made me whole. (1)

The most profound need we have is to be ‘touched’ by God in this way. And at the cross, he proclaimed that this is His Will. “I am willing” He said to the leper, He said to me, He said to you.

But there is one more thing. Perhaps God will bring someone into your life today, that needs to be touched in this way.

Will you be His hands?
