Programme 165 – Mazen Naswari (part 1)

Today we find ourselves in the heart of the Old City of Jerusalem, a short distance from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre – built over the site where many believe Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected. I went to meet Mazen Naswari who is an Arab and pastor of the Jerusalem Alliance Church. I asked him how long he’d been the pastor there.

Programme 164 – Kristina Kayser (part 3 of 3)

This programme is designed to bring you up to date news about what God is doing through believers living in Israel and the wider Middle East. Today we hear more from Kristina Kayser about Shevet Achim – an organisation run by Christians – that brings children suffering with severe and life threatening heart defects to Israel for surgery. These children come from muslim families. The workers from Shevet Achim do not use words to share their faith. So how does it work – is there more to this than heart surgery?

Programme 162 – Kristina Kayser (part 1 of 3)

It’s always interesting to find out why people do what they do, especially when they have moved way out of their comfort zone! Shevet Achim is a Christian organisation based in the Middle East that arranges for children with serious heart defects from Arab and Palestinian backgrounds to receive life saving medical treatment in Israel.

I visited their centre in Jerusalem recently and met Kristina Kayser, a nurse from America, who came to Jerusalem looking for work as a volunteer. Little did she realise what she was letting herself in for when she offered to help at Shevet Achim as she now explains.

Programme 161 – David & Karen Davis (part 4 of 4)

Welcome to this week’s edition of The Olive Tree where we return to Haifa in northern Israel and a recent meeting with David and Karen Davis who have lived there for over 20 years and established a centre to help addicts called House of Victory and a worship centre on Mt Carmel where believers from Jewish, Druze and Arab backgrounds meet together each week. David and Karen also travel a great deal carrying the message of God’s heart for Israel and her Jewish and Arab population. So in order to help us understand and be aware of the times in which we are living within a Biblical context, and to understand a little more about the complexity that is the Middle East, Karen begins this programme by introducing a talk recently given by her husband based on the story of Joseph.

Programme 159 – David & Karen Davis (part 2 of 4)

This week we are back in Haifa in northern Israel talking to David and Karen Davis. They came from New York to live in Israel over 20 years ago. David is not Jewish – Karen is and from the start they understood that God was calling them to work amongst both Arab and Jewish people. Early on they realised that many Israelis were seriously addicted to drugs and alcohol so they opened a centre called The House of Victory. They also started a congregation which today meets on Mt Carmel. In this interview I asked them to explain how they came to understand God’s heart for Israel and for both Jewish and Arab people and you will hear some of Karen’s music woven through the programme.

Programme 157 – Labib Madanat (part 3 of 3)

For the past two weeks my guest has been an Arab Palestinian Christian called Labib Madanat. For many years he lived in Jerusalem and today his work takes him across the Middle East as well as Israel where, on behalf of the Bible Society, he oversees two teams – one team is comprised of Messianic Jewish believers; the other is comprised of Arab Palestinian Christians. Labib understands about reconciliation and how important it is to God. So in this interview he describes some of the projects and situations that have both encouraged and challenged him recently.

Programme 155 – Labib Madanat (part 1 of 3)

My guest today is Labib Madanat. He is from a Jordanian family but spent much of his life living in Jerusalem. After studying in Iraq, he gave up what could have been a lucrative career in irrigation to become Director of the Palestinian Bible Society. That was several years ago. Today he is Director of Bible Society work in the Middle East and oversees teams of both Palestinian and Jewish believers. We met recently in the Alliance Church in Jerusalem, built in 1890. It is strategically placed in the city and has played an important role over the years as Labib now explains.

Programme 154 – Shira Sorko Ram

I recently met Shira Sorko Ram in Tel Aviv where she and her husband Ari, have been pastors of a congregation called Tifferet Yeshua since they started it several years ago. As well as leading a congregation they also run MAOZ – a humanitarian aid charity that supports those in need – both Jewish and Arab people. They also run conferences and events for the benefit of the entire body of believers in Israel. And they have always had a great compassion for Israeli Arab Christians and have done much to support them. But Ari and Shira are getting on now – they are not as young as they used to be! So what happens when a pioneering couple such as them have to look around to see who can take on the task? Here Shira shares how the transition is taking place in their situation – and how relieved and delighted they are!

Programme 152 – Marcel Rebiai (part 2 of 3)

Last week we heard from Marcel Rebiai, he lives in Jerusalem in a house overlooking Mount Zion! He described his unusual background of being born in Algeria where his father was Arab and his mother, whom he never met, was, he understands, from a Jewish family. Marcel lived for many years with a missionary family in Switzerland. Later, when he married, he and his wife took the decision to start a Christian community, at first within Europe, and live out their faith in a practical. 20 years ago, they arrived in Jerusalem. This was not an easy move for Marcel and he described how he struggled with the prospect for a long time. So I asked him how he started to build a community here.

Programme 151 – Marcel Rebiai (part 1 of 3)

Come with me to Jerusalem to a house overlooking Mount Zion where a man called Marcel Rebiai lives with his wife and family and a community of Christians. Marcel’s own story is extraordinary – he was born in Algeria where, for various reasons, he ran away from home and ended up being cared for by a Swiss missionary family. He became a believer in Jesus in Switzerland and very soon developed a desire to be an evangelist. In this programme, he explains how God started to shape his thinking and the course of his life.
